Cia. Cabelo de Maria - Projeto Cantos de Trabalho

The CD "Cantos de Trabalho" (working songs) appeared from the songs registered by
Renata Mattar. The musician has been researching these working songs for more than
ten years, recording, attending rituals and parties, learning verses and dances in many
different places in the country. She's been searching for communities that still worked
in "mutirão" (people who work in a mutual aid group for harvesting or house-building
taking turns), and who make use of the music in their work. The result of these
researches are in the CD released by Cia. Cabelo de Maria, under the direction of
Renata Mattar.
The songs presented on this CD come from the destaladeiras (women that pick the
leaves) of tobacco from Arapiraca (AL), from the descascadeiras (women that take the
skin off) of the manioc from Porto Real do Colégio (AL), from the rice planters from
Propriá (SE), from the farinhada (flour production) of the community of Barrocas (BA),
from the harvest of cocoa in Xique-Xique (BA), from the harvest of beans from Serrinha
(BA) e from the spinsters of cotton from Vale do Jequitinhonha (MG).
Musically, the arrangements privilege the acoustic format, taking a walk for a varied
range of Brazilian regional rhythms and styles. The feminine voices come in first plan,
assisted by guitars, cellos, violins, bass and other string instruments. The percussion is
made with conventional instruments and proper objects used in the works, approaching
the audition to the sensation of hearing the workers in their jobs.
The CD counts on the special participation of the "destaladeiras" of tobacco from
Arapiraca in some of the tracks. This choice was taken because, besides they have
already participated of the Cia. Cabelo de Maria's concert, that community works, with
a same group of people, in different jobs where the presence of singing is a constant.
Thus, beyond songs of the "destalação" of the tobacco, the women of Arapiraca also
present the coco (regional rhythm) for the building of adobe wall houses, songs to
pound the corn and songs for the harvest of beans, giving a good sample of the
working songs that are found throughout Brazil.
